We were standing on the eastern margin of the plain, just under the hills that buttress the mountains. If the reader has any desire to picture the scene, let him fancy himself on a flat shore, or wading in a shallow sea, under the shadow of fairly steep cliffs. And in the time of our Lord the spot on which we stood was doubtless the floor of the sea ; it has been .rising gradually for huiidreds of years~it is rising still..
我們正站在平原的東方邊際，正是扶撐眾山的山丘之下。假如讀者有任何渴望勾畫這場景，讓他想像正在完全地陡峭懸崖之下的一處平坦的岸邊，或是在淺水中涉水而行。而且我們的主的時間內，這個我們所站的地點無疑地是海的底面；已漸漸地升起，它正在安靜地升起，數百年來不斷升起，仍然在抬升著。
The, hills above us had been a battle-ground for Chinese and savages through many a generation. In one of the Chinese villages, perched on a heiglit of about two thousand feet, the inhabitants peer down into the Great Glen, and away to the cities of the plain, in the west, while on the east they gaze on the mysterious mountains. But they have neither

leisure nor inclination for romance ; they have known what stem reality is. Any day a mother, may be heard scolding her children with the words,Do you wish the savages to cut off your head ? ” They recall the time when they had fierce encounters with the head-hunters. In the Great Glen, itself I have slept in a hut which, a year or two previously, had housed some camphor-workers, and those men carried on their work in constant danger from the wild men of the mountains.

It was at the foot of those hills that we were standing this hot morning at the opening of the year. We were shaded by a spreading fruit-tree, and around us were men and women in holiday garb, while above ns, on the branches, were sportiye children.. The villagers listened to our preaching, but not with great attention; for at this season everyone is set on gambling, and, as we came here through, the fields, a crowd of gamblers, who took us for the police, scampered away like frightened, deer.
在今年年初的炎熱早晨，我們站立在那些山丘的山腳，一棵寬闊的果樹遮蔽我們，而且在周圍是穿著假日服裝的男女，在我們的上頭，枝葉上是玩耍的孩子。村莊的人聽到我們的傳講，但是沒有很大的注意；因為這個季節每個人忙於賭博，而且，當我們越過田野來到這，賭博的群眾，錯認我們是警察，像一隻害怕的鹿跑走了!
A Christian, with broad forehead, a square bony face, and a firm-set expression, invites ns to dine with him. Up the sunny path, a full half-mile, we follow him. In a little dell, on.a knoll above the stream, stands his house. It is new, and strongly constructed, with walls of mud-bricks and a roof of thatch. As we step indoors, we observe that the table is laden with great store of provisions. When all the guests have washed their hands in warm water, and have tasted a. cup of straw-coloured tea, we are ready to begin.

We had not previously been acquainted, with this man, or heard anything concerning him except that lie was a churchgoer, and expected us to dinner. We knew, of course, that since the savages had been forced to retire into the loftier ranges, many farmers had emigrated from the over-peopled coastlands to cultivate bananas on these slopes. And there were little colonies of Christians in the district, who might be seen hurrying' to Misty-Mount with their produce on the banana-market day, when vast quantities are： sold for export to the mainland of Japan. This cliurchgoer, however, was a solitary Christian.

As we sat down to dinner, one of the Christians who had escorted us remarked that, until recently, our host had been in .much trouble because, by an accident, his name had not been set down in the census-roll kept by the authorities. “ It was not by accident/' our host replied gravely, and -with a touch of asperity, for he must have felt that polite evasions of the stem tmth were out of keeping. Then we heard, partly from himself, partly from those who lad conducted us to his home, the adventures of this outlaw.

In the year 1895 the Japanese army took possession of Formosa, and, as we have already recorded, before the year closed, fighting ceased. But the following season all was unrest, and in some quarters fearful things were done. * The broad dale in which. Misty-Monnt and Nanto (Chinese Lamtaw) lie, • saw many a crime and many a contest, because it is situated between the long dragon-hill of a former chapter and the outer ranges of the mountains, where malcontents could hide themselves with ease.
事情發生在1895年日本軍人擁有福爾摩沙，且這是我們已經記載了，在年終之前，征戰停止了。但是接下來的季節所有的事都不平靜，且在一些地方做了很多令人害怕的事。寬廣的山谷中，煙雨濛濛的山及南投位置，看到很多的犯罪及很多的搶奪，因為座落在綿長的龍脊山丘(上一章講過)及山地的外圍部分之間，在那裏不滿現狀的人能不費力的躲藏起來。
Banditti in hundreds, were put to death. Many an innocent person was slain with the guilty. Harrowing tales, which I am unwilling to repeat, often came to everyone’s ears in those times. A single incident will suffice ; our host would probably have reckoned it a mere trifle in comparison with those that stirred his spirit. One bright morning I heard a shot fired, and shortly afterwards, as I continued my walk, I saw, in his indigo-blue coat and trousers, a man lying stiff on the sward. I was informed thata bevy of police had fallen upon him with the question, ‘‘ Where have you come from ? ” ■ “ From“Nanto”，the honest fellow replied. But Nanto was a very hotbed of disturbance, and the officers of justice leapt to the conclusion that lie wasbent on mischief. In truth he was on the harmless errand, of claiming the payment of a debt.

Fearful vengeance was. sometimes taken by those who had suffered wrong, and. again the innocent perished along with the guilty. Two coolies were pushing a little waggon along a light railway when in a slight cutting they paused to take breath. Suddenly the rebels swooped down on their passengers, five male nurses and police. They were never heard of more.
可怕的復仇有時是由那些因錯誤而受苦的人所做出的，而且無罪的人再次隨著罪而消失了。兩個苦力正推著一台小的運貨小車，沿著一個輕軌鐵路，當在脆弱的鐵路上他們暫停去喘一口氣。突然地，叛軍襲擊他們的乘客，五個男護士及警察。人們不再聽到他們的消息了。
Our host, with the heart of a patriot, was bent on something greater than petty murder. He got together a company of desperadoes who waged many a fight with the Japanese. At last he collected an army of five thousand men, and they marched north to take the city of Taichu, wtiich is the centre of government for mid-Formosa. If they had attained their goal, not a Japanese would have been left alive. At Bridgehead, two miles from- the city, they came face to face with the imperial troops. They were sure of victory. Just then came a great downpour of rain. It was little that in the tropical torrent all were wet to the skin. But there were no metalled roads, the narrow paths were flooded and became like watercourses, and the rice fields were a quagmire; The opposing armies were compelled to disperse, and in great disorder they staggered home.
我們的主人，有愛國者之心，比起這些小規模謀殺，他下決心做更大的事，他與亡命之徒同作伴，這些亡命之徒過去進行很多與日本人的征戰，而且他們往北行進取得台中城，這個城是日本人在中台灣的政治中心。假如他們達到他們的目標，沒有一位日本人會被留命而活著。在橋頭堡，離此城市兩哩遠(3.2KM)，他們與日本帝國軍隊面對面。他們確實能勝利，只是後來有一場大雨來攪局。在熱帶中的洪流中這是小的，所有人身上都濕了。但是沒有碎石鋪的路，這狹窄的路徑都淹水了，且變成像運河一般，稻米田變一個沼澤地；敵軍被迫驅散，且引起很大的失序，他們難以相信的竟回家了。
The chief could not long hold five thousand mentogether. When fortune turned against him, and he was hard pressed, he and a hundred of his followers withdrew to the mountains ;for a twelvemonth they lived beside the savages. “ Did they not attack you ? we asked, for we were amazed. “No,” said le, “ we were on friendly terms.” But how could they keep soul and body together ? Did they make an occasional raid upon Chinese farmers, and return with a load of rice ?“ No, we were not robbers,” the chief reminded us, and he spoke with dignity. We may guess that they hunted the deer and the antelope, and perhaps they bartered some of their game for the millet grown by savages.

Many of the man’s comrades must have been captured, or killed in skirmish; many must have given themselves up on promise of pardon ; his own brother perished. He made for himself a home in aimt among the hills, but he could never relax his vigilance, nor could he trust anyone who approached his refuge in silence. It might be a foe ; it might be a betrayer. Friends, when they paid him a visit, called aloud to warn him of their arrival. The rebel chief had a sure aim; his life was the forfeit if he missed, and when anyone came on without a word he was shot dead.
這位老兄的很多同志一定是被捕捉了，或是在小規模戰鬥中被殺；很多一定是已放棄他們本身在赦免的應許上；他自己的兄弟都赴義了!他為自己在山丘間打造一個家，但是他不能放鬆他自己的警戒心，也無法信任任何安靜到達他的避難所的人。有可能是一個仇敵；可能是一個叛徒。當朋友們因參訪他時，他們到達時大聲地叫要警告他。叛亂者頭頭有一個確定的瞄準目標，假如他錯過了他的生命會喪失，且當任何一個人跟著來到時若沒說話，如此就被射死了。
The hutwassurronnded once and again by- Japanese infantry and police, and he had but barely time to escape and hide himself in the long grass. He had trusty friends who never once failed to gave him warning; through all the long years they guarded him. But when a little child was bom to him, and the pursuers were all around, the cries of the infant were such a terror to thehunted chief that he was almost driven to suffocate his first-born. . . •.
這間小屋再次被日本部隊及警察圍繞著，而且，他幾乎沒有時間去逃跑，以及躲藏在長長的草地上。他有信賴的朋友，從來不會錯失他的警告；從頭到尾整年度，他們看顧他。但是當他有一個小孩子出生時，且追跑者都完全在四周，嬰孩的哭聲對要被拘捕的頭頭是一件恐怖的事，他幾乎是被第一個孩子逼到窒息。
As month followed month, and year followed year, the little family were forced to elude their enemies by shifting from place to place. For a time they lived beside some Christians who had plantations of bananas on the hillside. They taught him a little of the Gospel, and he was pleased with- what he heard. Churchgoing was not for him ; he advised his kinsmen, however, to go to the place of worship. Yet for the banana-planters he was not a welcome neighbour, for if the police had searched the groves it might have fared ill with those who had harboured an outlaw. For a month, he and his wife and child were cooped in the hollow trunk of an old camphor tree.

In later years the long chase slackened. And now there were men of his acquaintance who ventured to plead his cause with the magistrates. Why continue , the pursuit of a man who had long given up all purpose of rebellion, and was willing, had he only the chance, to lead a peaceable life ? Why not let bygones be bygones, and inscribe his name on the census-roll ? Thus at last, after twenty years of war, wandering, hiding, and hairbreadth escapes, the outlaw is enrolled as a Japanese subject. He is free to go to church now, and on Sundays he may be seen, with Mswife and children, among the congregation of God’s people at Misty-Mount.
在數年之後，長期的追逐就鬆綁了，且現在有他的熟知的人，此熟知的人冒險去懇求他，乃是因為治安法庭。為什麼繼續，追蹤一個人，這人已長期放棄所有判斷的目的，且樂意他僅有此機會以帶來和平的生活?為什麼不既往不咎，要在人口普查登記他的名字?如此至少在20年的戰爭，流浪，隱藏，以及短距離的脫逃，亡命之徒被登記入名冊，當成日本的臣民。他現在很自由到教會，且在禮拜日於霧峰，與上帝的子民聚集的教會中，可能看見他與太太、孩子。
